Do you ever wish your life had come with an
instruction book – a guide so you wouldn’t
have to figure everything out the hard way?
I wished I had one as I struggled to figure
everything out the hard way, so I wrote one.
The book will be published soon, and in the
meantime, I invite you to read excerpts
here and on
my blog,
TheBestLifeGuidebook. I generally
post on Tuesday and Friday.
In addition to excerpts, I write about how
we can use what I figured out to easily
solve challenges in our daily lives. (Hint:
replace the stories we tell that limit our
possibilities with ones that guide us toward
what we want; change thinking and behavior
habits that keep us stuck repeating the same
unpleasant experiences to ones that open
doors of possibilities).
It took me too long to learn that living my
life to please other people would never make
me happy. And it wasn’t even possible! There
were too many people to try to please, and
they all really wanted me to change so
they’d be happy.
Looking back, I can see I had opportunities
to make my life easier and more successful
earlier, but I told myself the wrong stories
– the ones I’d heard all my life about what
I should and shouldn’t do – and those
stories kept me stuck having the same
frustrating experiences. I had to change my
thinking, my behavior, and my stories before
I could trust and follow my own guidance.
Unfortunately, it took a serious health
challenge for me to see and understand the
changes I needed to make. Several years ago,
I had a 6+ cm cancerous lump removed from my
right breast. My surgeon said she hadn’t
gotten clean margins, so I’d need to have a
mastectomy, chemo, and radiation in order to
“maybe” survive. From what she told me, I
was pretty sure I wouldn’t be around by the
following year. Everybody I’d known who’d
had cancer had died within a few months, and
I expected I would, too.
But my inner guidance nudged me away from
the toxic treatments my doctors pushed me to
have, and I learned to question the stories
I’d been taught; I learned to risk slipping
out of old behavior habits and trust myself
as never before so I’d have the confidence
to take charge of my own healthcare. With
newly won confidence, I chose a path to
wellness that was designed to support my
immune system so it could eliminate
straggler cancer cells on its own.
I’d learned a lot, but once the threat of
dying had softened, I relaxed back into some
old unhelpful thinking, stories, and
behavior habits. Then came another very dark
time in my life, and again I had to
consciously choose what I thought about,
what stories I told myself, and what
behavior habits to slip into in order to
survive.
Now I teach what I struggled to learn so
others won’t have to.
